Some notes from my trip...
I was amazed by Mycenae. The ancient city stands defiently between mountains where the rocky ground seems the earth's answer to the arid sky and desolate winds. It was a lonley place, a place where humanity fought for its existence against the elements, their capricious and unpitying gods. Poppies dotted the ruins, their bold berry red casting an unexpectedly cheerful contrast with the otherwise unforgiving landscape until one recalls the tragedies of Aeschylus. The flowers struck my fancy as a tribute to royal blood spilled. It was a place of desolate beauty, worthy of its grand literary history.
It was a very welcome break from Athens, in any case...
